Located on the coast of the state of Oaxaca at the edge of the Sierra Madre mountains, Huatulco spans 20 miles of Mexicos Pacific coastline, betwee n the Coyula and Copalita rivers. Huatulco is just 140 miles from the city of Oaxaca. Today you'll find Huatulco is still one of Mexicos most relaxed destinations. The centerpiece of Huatulcos charm is a series of nine bays, encompassing 36 beaches and numerous inlets and coves, each with its own unique setting and ecology.
Huatulco has a wide variety of accommodations from rooms for rent, small economy hotels, luxury oceanfront villas, vacation condominiums, bed and breakfasts, as well as several luxury resorts standing on or near the shores of Tangolunda Bay. The big resorts are far away one from another. It has very diferent kinds of restaurants and you can enjoy good cousine both cheap and expensive. Cheap sea food by the sea, near downtown.
There are a number of coffee plantations which are still in operation and give tours, including Finca (farm) Las Nieves, Finca Monte Carlos, Finca Margaritas, Finca El Pacifico and Finca La Gloria. Finca El Pacifico is known for the organic coffee it produces called "Pluma Hidalgo," and it is surrounded by waterfalls and ravines. Finca La Gloria is known for the butterfly sanctuary "Mariposorio Dain Biguid", where dozens of species of butterflies can be seen and the "Llano Grande Falls". The Rio Copalitilla has its source here as well.
The downtown area is in the shape of a square and this is where you can find the bar. Water-based fun....you can hire various types of small crafts and kayaks and jet-skis to see the bays and beaches, or to go swimming, snorkeling or scuba diving, or to fish for sailfish, marlin, mahi mahi, and tuna, or to "veg" on a beach or 2 (or 3, 4....)
If you're minds are set on Huatulco, then perhaps spend a few days there kayaking, and a few days in Oaxaca's Sierra Norte, hiking. Always hot and sunny, no rain, no wind, blue / green snorkeable waters and very friendly and quaint! Land trips by taxis, bus, mini van, ATVs, scooters, bikes and/or horses to the mountains and jungles to see the flora and fauna and plantations, or to bathe under a waterfall, or go to river rafting or rock climbing or to see and lay-on the beaches; for instance, the magical waterfalls in Copalita ("cascadas magicas de copalitilla") and the lagoon where you can swing-out from the top like Tarzan and plunge into the refreshing waters. We enjoy going there when we run out of coffee because the nearby plantations have some of the best roasted beans in the area.
Huatlulco is a planed resort community. Huatulco is very laid back and beautiful with the mountains meeting the ocean. Bird watching excursions (remember that Huatulco is in the middle of a National Park System) Water-based excursions by various types of small crafts and kayaks to see the bays and beaches, or to go swimming, snorkeling or scuba diving, or to fish for sailfish, marlin, mahi mahi, and tuna, or to "veg" on a beach or two (or three....)
