No need for a passport or any ID to change your dollars, and they do not take names as you change money. Use your debit card, carry little cash, change only the money you think you will need for the day. Keep a second card at your hotel safe for emergencies. Make a copy of passport, your drivers license, and flight itinerary and keep that in a safe place away from the originals. You can use US dollars in Cancun and tip with dollars. They actually prefer to see USD over Pesos. You will see when you arrive that Cancun is very Americanized. US Dollars are very, very common in Cancun. Just remember if you buy something and use USD they will give you back your change in Pesos.

Always ask a taxi driver before you enter the cost for the ride. Taxi drivers are notorious for ripping off tourist in Cancun as well as all tourist areas. There is a bus service which runs 24 hours and runs the entire Kulkucan Blvd and cost about a dollar.

Cancun offers the best nightlife in the world. It's a all night party that goes until 6 in the morning. Generally, yes it's almost like an Ibiza type atmosphere. January is a slower month of tourism for Cancun so it won't be as crowded as the summer months.

Close by in the Riviera Maya and the Grand Costa Maya, there are sites such as Coba and Muyil (Riviera) the small Pole (now Xcaret), and Kohunlich, Kinichna, Dzibanche, Oxtankah, Tulum, and Chacchoben, in the south of the state. Chichen Itza is in the neighboring state of Yucatan.
