Mexico City is the leading destination for international airlines, although many offer direct flights to tourist destinations such as Cancun, Guadalajara, Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, Manzanillo, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan, Los Cabos and Monterrey. There are more than fifty airports in Mexico with regular passenger flights run by local airlines, plus several smaller airports with feeder services.

There are flights to Mexico from just about every major US city, especially Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Miami, etc. Canada: Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver. But if you live close to the boarder it's usually cheaper to cross into Mexico and take an internal flight.

Airports

You can find a good exchange rate at the airports. Before traveling, we suggest that you check the new regulation restricting the liquids, sprays and gels allowed in carry-on luggage. Take only authorized taxis, these are safer.  Please note that for international travel you must check-in three hours before the flight; for domestic flights, two hours are required.

Car

To enter the country in a private car, you will require a Temporary Import Permit, which you can obtain by showing a vehicle ownership document, your driver’s license, passport, a fee ( around US$27 for an ordinary car, US$45 for a camper) and deposit. The permits are good for 180 days, during which time you can drive your car out of Mexico and return.

By accessing your vehicle Upon entering Mexico in your vehicle you must select one of the following tracks: Self-declaration. Additional choose when you bring your personal luggage merchandise, or when you exceed the amount of your franchise. Nothing to declare. It is only choose when you bring your luggage and do not exceed your franchise.

Insurance: if your auto insurance policies don't cover Mexico, a Mexican policy is available from numerous agencies on either side of every border post.

You can drive in Baja California, western Sonora and the free zone (25km from the border) without any special formality.

Driving licences from the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and most European countries are valid in Mexico, also you can use your International Driving Licence available from motoring organizations (AAA in the US, CAA in Canada, AA in Britain).

If you require any assistance while driving, you may call the Green Angels’ number (078), who will provide free assistance. They offer emergency services, first aid and information on road conditions.

Major U.S. car rental companies –FOX, Alamo, Avis, Dollar and Hertz– operate in Mexico.

Border Crossings: There are some forthy frontier posts along the US-Mexico border. The main ones, open 24 hours a day, seven days a week: San diego California/Tijuana Baja California, Calexico California/Mexicali Baja California, Nogales Arizona/Nogales Sonora, Douglas Arizona/Agua Prieta Sonora, El Paso Texas/Ciudad Juarez Chihuahua, Laredo Texas/Nuevo Laredo Tamaulipas, Brownsville Texas/Matamoros Tamaulipas.

Passenger trains

Currently, only two passenger trains operates in Mexico:

US passenger train services (Amtrak) reach the border (San Diego or El Paso). This give you plenty of time to get across the frontier and get a bus or flight on to Mexico City.

Boat

To sail to Mexico in your own boat, similar conditions apply to those in effect for motor vehicles, Alternatively several lines offer cruises on the Pacific coast, most popularly between LA and Acapulco, stopping at Los Cabos, Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta and Zihuatanejo. Others ply the Caribbean side out Miami to Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Cancun, and other Mexican destinations.

Ferries: Connects Baja California with three ports on the Pacific mainland: Santa Rosalia to Guaymas, La Paz to Mazatlan and Topolobampo (for los Mochis). There are also smaller boats to islands off the Caribbean and Gulf coasts.

Buses

Are the most comfortable and most economical means to travel between Mexican destinations. Business class is the lowest priced; it offers an onboard bathroom, television and reclining seats. First class offers spacious reclining seats, television, air conditioning, serves drinks and even snacks.

North American bus travel, Greyhound runs regularly to all major border crossings, some of their buses will also take you over the frontier to a Mexican bus station. Even more Mexican bus companies cross the border into the US, so that you can pick up a bus to Mexico e.g. Houston or LA.
