Chelem is a small fishing port in the state of Yucatan in Mexico, located on the northern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, west of the port of Progreso, which has been transformed into a predominantly tourist destination thanks to its beaches, estuary and its proximity to Yukalpetén, sheltered harbor serving the boats of the fishermen of the region. Its proximity to the port of Progreso makes the town is very popular, particularly during the summer months. If you are looking for an authentic Mexican experience in a clean and quiet fishing village, Chelem is the place.No big hotels, timeshare recruiters, traffic and bright lights, Chelem is a picturesque harbor. To the west of Progreso, Chelem you can reach via public transport or rented car. Once there, you find the Main Plaza, the Municipal Building with its arches, the church, a local market, with many Beeches meal of seafood and some nice beaches. If you stay in Chelem, you see that you can walk to the Plaza and observe the daily life of local people. Yucatan is known for its birds which makes it the ideal Chelem to see many of these species place. Located between the Gulf of Mexico and the marsh, Chelem is one with nature. Chelem is a popular place among the "snowbirds" people coming from the US and Canada to spend the winter. Something fun and interesting to do in Chelem is to visit the river by boat to see the flamingos and the waterhole.

Chelem is 9 km west of the port of Progreso and 45 km north of the city of Merida, capital of Yucatan state access from Merida (45 km, 50 minutes) Take the road north of Merida Progreso (federal road 261) and advance approximately 25 km) Follow the exit to Chelem-Chuburna Continue until you get to Chelem.
