The island was discovered by Hernán Cortés during his trip to the mainland in 1534 and named Pearl Island by the large number of oysters found there. Many years later, in 1631, Juan de Iturbe and Francisco de Ortega, who were engaged in fishing pearls, baptized with its current name.
The island has 99 kilometers of area, its coasts have many multicolored cliffs where volcanic strata are appreciated. Holy Spirit is the habitat and refuge of different endemic species such as herons, red-tailed hawk, the cat tail bell and black hare. They are also sea lions and fur seals.
Although at one time was inhabited today Island of the Holy Spirit is only playground. The visiting divers, fishermen and tourists who like to spend the day at its beautiful coves: San Gabriel, the Whale, the hen, the Candlestick. The island of Isla Partida is separated by a narrow channel at low tide allows communication between them.
On the island may be the remains of the pearl farm which operated until 1910, the first in the Americas.
There are continuous hiking and camping in the Holy Spirit that attract those who enjoy watching wildlife, especially birds, and hiking. In small Roosters, Chicken and Ballena, near the island of Espiritu Santo, can be practiced diving.
In the city of La Paz you can visit the Cathedral of Our Lady of La Paz, the Library of the Californias and Cultural Unity Agúndez Jesus Castro. There are also lots of fun at night in discos and nightclubs.
We suggest you hire the services of a guide. In La Paz there are several companies with expert guides who run tours to the islands. Please note that not allowed to swim, snorkel or in any way invade the territory of the seals, since they tend to be quite aggressive if disturbed. SOURCE: SECTUR
