Some hieroglyphic inscriptions on steles and panels of the site allow us to say that Coba was the original name of the city. One of the possible meanings and the most plausible, given its proximity to the lakes, is "choppy water." Cultural significance The city of Coba was developed about five lakes that were essential to their development and survival factor. With approximately 70km2 extension, the city was served by extensive road raised stone, known in Mayan language as sacbé (clipping), length and width variables. The people of Coba who belonged to the powerful class, residing near the center of the city, very similar to the modern Maya houses. A new architecture is introduced and incorporated into existing buildings and most of its sculpted monuments, relocated to small platforms and niches.
Must Know
Services available in the area must pay a fee for access to the parking lot, by the ejido of Coba. The site has toilets and an area for issuing tickets. In the immediate vicinity are dedicated to selling food and crafts of the region establishments. Community guides offer tours on foot or by bicycle, during visiting hours.

Respect the cultural heritage of the site and the natural environment. Follow the directions of the custodians of the archaeological zone. low and comfortable shoes, light clothes, hat and sunscreen are recommended. The walking tour is nice and most recommended, but can also be done by bike or tricitaxi.

From Cancun, Quintana Roo, the Federal Highway 307 is taken towards the south to the town of Tulum, where Highway 109 is taken in the direction of New Xcan and after traveling 47 km. Coba be found. Visitors can also reach the site by public transport.
