Information
The name El Caracol was given from snails that adorn the small dome that crowns the roof of this small temple. It is also known as the "Tomb of the Caracol" for its small size, which resembles a burial mound. Cultural significance is a set of structures of East Coast style, built during the Late Post Classic (1200-1500 AD), which includes The remains of two major temples whose roofs are collapsed, but they seem to have been vaulted. Close to them is the building of El Caracol, which was originally a vaulted ceiling and miniature four-door temple, which was later surrounded on three sides by a larger construction. On the roof is a small square temple with four openings and a top hole where an auction was placed in snail shape, decorated with four rows of natural shells embedded in the stucco. In the popular imagination is said that the wind is whistling snails, and that the ancient Mayans associated with hurricanes and wind worship; however, there is no concrete evidence that proves so, nor is there any condo association with the goddess Ixchel, which the Spanish chroniclers of the sixteenth century linked to the island of Cozumel and its buildings. The unique decoration of the roof this building is unique in the region, making a visit highly recommended, including an exceptional sea of Punta Sur Cozumel Island view.
