Yohualichan name has been interpreted as "house of night", Nahuatl designation of origin may be associated with the profusion of caves in the region, which could be the model stylized niches that characterize the structures on the site. Importance The importance of the archaeological site is that it was the first totonaco settlement which had reached a peak and great development around 600 AD to the abandonment of the site to migrate to what today is known as the Tajin was the second ceremonial center of the Totonac and in turn Cempoala subsequent migration to the encounter with the Spaniards in the sixteenth century. In Yohualichan you can witness the beginnings of an architectural movement in ceremonial buildings such as the inclusion of traditional niches that have been characteristic of the Totonac culture. Site Description The Totonac Yohualichan had established in the early Classic period (200-900 d. C.) as an advanced group of El Tajin, Veracruz, located in a straight line about 60 km. The best known of this zone with influence of El Tajin is one where a similar monumental architecture to be seen in the metropolis. It is a ceremonial center that was established on a series of natural platforms. The buildings were arranged around a large rectangular square, so that one of them was intentionally isolated on the north side. A ball around 94 meters long with vertical walls delimiting and small stools at the ends that give the traditional form of double T. It is known that in the Post Classic (900-1521 AD.), Were major realignments population shifts mainly arid others with better chances, sparking clashes with groups inhabiting the fertile land. It is possible that Totonacos, Yohualichan residents, have been displaced by these invasions, however, the cultural development of the city is yet to be explored.

Get There
The site is located in the town of Yohualichan, Puebla, 165 km., From the state capital, following largely the Puebla-Xalapa Superhighway, where there is a deviation to the Eastern Basin and the Sierra Norte de Puebla, en route to Cuetzalan del Progreso. Direct access to the site is by a deviation within 12 kilometers of Cuetzalan on a paved road.
