Information
Mictlan, which in Nahuatl means "place of the dead" was the name given to this place Mexica.Lyobaa Zapotec name is identified as "resting place", "burial", "tomb", "abundant place in bodies" or "graveyard" by various authors. Cultural Importance The archaeological zone of Mitla is nestled in the portion North Tlacolula Valley. The monuments that can be visited here are divided into five groups, four of which are very similar to each other, being formed by two quadrangular courtyard surrounded by large rooms on each of its sides. The other set is one courtyard surrounded by terraced foundations made with adobe. The main feature of this area is that the facades of the halls and interior walls are richly decorated with mosaics limestone forming frets. Unlike what is commonly thought, this feature is not Mixteca culture that influenced significantly to the Late Post Classic, but it is a hallmark of Zapotec ancestry who lived there to the fall of Monte Alban. From the Oaxacan capital is reached by Pan American (No. 190) road leading to Tehuantepec, taking the exit at km 39, to the north, after 4 km, you reach the village of Mitla, where it is the archaeological site, following the Morelos street and then down the street February 5; then by street Reforma. By public transport, leaving the City of Oaxaca Mitla bound trucks, but these only stand at the entrance of the village.
