Because the site of Tres Cerritos is one of the few settlements excavated systematic way Cuitzeo Basin, the data that have been obtained from this place, have contributed significantly to understanding various stages at the regional level. From the aforementioned activities, has been established in this settlement, there were at least two major periods of occupation. The first is associated with local developments Cuitzeo, when the site serves as an important ceremonial center. It should be noted that during this time, in the region there were a number of small settlements not stand each other, indicating the lack of a settlement to concentrate power in the region. During the first stage, ceramic and architectural elements have great similarities to those from Teotihuacan, which, rather than indicate a subjection of this city are observed, they seem to reveal that its adoption was as a status symbol by local elites. A second moment of occupation, says the arrival of groups linked to the Tarascan empire who used the site, among other things, to bury their dead over the walls and into the collapse of structures, which indicates that Tres Cerritos took several years of neglect.
