This city has received several names over time. For 1871-1872 Rite Zetina, who makes the first concrete reference to the site, it mentions under the name Mench. In 1881, Edwin Rockstroh who worked for the Boundary Commission between Mexico and Guatemala, refers to it as Mench Bol. Alfred P. Maudslay called Menhé Tinamit ("the city of young forest"), misnomer, since it is composed of a Mayan and other Nahuatl word; Charnay Lorillard used the name in honor of Pierre Lorillard who provided funding for shipment. Finally, Teobert Maler, taking the name from a nearby stream channel in which stones are greenish, applied the name to the ruins of Yaxchilan, which is what has kept until today. Recently, Dr. Yuri Knorozov suggested, from the phonetic reading of the glyphs, which may be the translation of the Great House of Culebra.Importance Cultural Yaxchilan is an example of the heyday of the Maya city-states during the Late Classic . The importance of Yaxchilan lies not only in the beauty of architecture, but also in its 124 articles in 30 stelae, 21 altars, 59 lintels and seven different inscriptions, made in this period. The texts narrate the establishment of alliances or conflicts, but mainly, these monuments contain hieroglyphic texts and representations of the protagonists of the various events, mainly of rulers, among them Shield Jaguar I (681-742 AD.) . Get There
Access is possible from Palenque, Chiapas, along the newly paved road (in 2000) leading, heading southeast to the town of Chancalá, Chiapas, about 40 kilometers away. It continues along the same path in the direction toward the Boca del Lacantún after about 105 kilometers, reaching the cruise Frontera Corozal or Frontera Echeverria, where it turns to the northeast until, after 15 kilometers to a village on the River Usumacinta. In Frontera Corozal and following the course of the Usumacinta River, 30 kilometers after being landed at the site of Yaxchilan.
