Information
The site is known as "Lagartero" since 1972, when the first settlers arrived, and then abundant lizards in the CiƩnega. The river also named Lagartero. Importance Cultural Lagartero played a very important role in the Late Classic period, serving as a midpoint between the culture of the lowland and highland Maya of Guatemala, Chiapas and the central depression. Lagartero may have been the point of origin of vessels effigies style that later developed in Central America and spread to many other parts of Mesoamerica. The characteristics of its spatial distribution, its architecture and associated archaeological material, Lagartero is a major ceremonial center in the upper basin of the Rio Grijalva but politically could be considered as a site of second order compared to his contemporaries as Chinkultic neighbors. Recommendations: Comfortable clothing, a hat, insect repellent. Water to hydrate, binoculars. There are areas set aside for visitors to bathe, take the necessary precautions in the marsh by the presence of lizards. In the ejido can practice some adventure tourism activities (hiking, observing flora and fauna) and overnight at the Ecological Center of the ejido.
Get There
You reach the site by taking the road from Comitan to Ciudad Cuauhtemoc, at kilometer 56.7, before reaching the bridge of San Gregorio, the deviation leading to the head of the ejido Christopher Columbus is taken. The architectural complexes are located 1.5 km away from this point. You have to cross the Rio Lagartero by several wooden bridges to get to the main section of the site: The Limonal. Visitors can reach the site by public transport, and the end of access should be walking so you can enjoy the lake environment surrounding the site.
