Chinkultic. The name can mean "cave with declines" derived from Chen - "cave" and koeltik - "drops", but can also be translated from the Tojolabal which means "our little mountain"Cultural Significance: This site is characterized by a settlement whose architecture is very particularly adapted to the topography of the terrain. The site is divided into four architectural ensembles: the A is the highest and from this the entire site so also called El Mirador is mastered; Acropolis dominates this set. In the Set B mainly it highlights the great Sunken Plaza.In the Set C the Ball and the Great Platform is located and in the Joint D include a large pyramidal base and the Platform of Lajas, named after this structure is formed by large blocks of cut stone which can reach 2.6 by 40 meters and larger are the building blocks known in Mesoamerica.Recently this site was analyzed from the perspective of performance spaces that are formalized in large enclosed spaces and some Classic sites in the case of Chinkultic seen in the Sunken Plaza.On the other hand Chinkultic also stands out as a site of Mayan Highlands that transcends the collapse of most of the sites in this region at the end of the Late Classic. This shows the importance the presence of ceramic Plumbate Tohil type, widely distributed in Mesoamerica, especially in places with Toltec influence. Chronology: 50 a. 1200 C. d. C. Recommendations: Wear comfortable clothes, available to hike and climb to the Acropolis. Hat and mosquito repellent, binoculars, water. No nearby store rather than the ejido. In times of heavy rains (August-October) grows the river which sometimes can not reach the Acropolis.
Get There
You need to move on Federal Highway No. 190, of Comitan towards La Trinitaria. From this last town it continues along the same road to reach the town Hidalgo, from where a path heading north which leads to the archaeological site. You can reach the site by public transport, Comitan out groups leading to Lagos de Montebello and the public should descend on the cruise of Ejido Miguel Hidalgo and walk about two kilometers to reach the site.
