"The Tiger" has been identified by several authors as Itzamkanac of historical sources. The name by which he is known today corresponds to the ejido in which it is located. Acalán, or "place of canoes" is the name by which it was known to the pre-Hispanic province Chontal Maya group settled along the Rio Candelaria. Cultural Significance Due to the imposing of the buildings and the size of the area, it is thought that El Tigre corresponds to Itzamkanac of historical sources, capital Acalan and where Hernán Cortés Cuauhtemoc killed. In the ceremonial center traces indicating the title of the temples dedicated to deities allegedly Chontal origin Itzamná Ixchel and today seek. The latter was the god worshiped by the ruling classes, who may have tried to introduce monotheism. On a hilly along the Rio Candelaria Itzamkanac site or El Tigre is based;with a long sequence of occupation ranging from the Middle Preclassic (600-300 BC.) to the Protohistoric (ca. 1557 AD.). Comprised of six architectural groups, the central area of the site has shown a definite style. One of the seats is surrounded by pyramidal bases and anthropomorphic figureheads from the Preclassic. The settlement has several architectural styles: Peten, Rio Bec and Late.

Get There
It can be done by boat, starting from the town of Candelaria on the river of the same name, or by road, on the way Escárcega Villahermosa, the New Coahuila height of the town, taking the detour to Monclova (km 13.5), which leads directly to the site. From Candelaria are approximately 51 km, follow the road to the villages-Monclova Mexico State and between the State of Mexico and Monclova there is a deviation of 9.3 kilometers to the archaeological site of El Tigre.
